Defensive Driving Courses

Defensive driving courses are programs which aim to advance a driver’s skill so that they are able to drive as safely as possible in any situation. These types of courses are often undertaken by people whose profession is likely to expose them to a greater than average risk when driving. An ideal example of the type of person who would take a defensive driving course is a police driver, who is likely to require higher than average driving skills to perform their job safely and effectively. Of course the police force runs their own internal defensive driving courses for their officers, but many of the defensive driving courses available to the general public will be based on the type of course run by the police force. In fact many defensive driving courses are run by ex police drivers. There are defensive driving course available that are specific to certain types of vehicle and many people will take courses tailored to motorcycle or minibus drivers.

Companies who employ a large number of drivers such as a haulage company may require their employees to complete a defensive driving course in order to protect their fleet of vehicles, but also it protects them from accusations of corporate manslaughter if one of their drivers were to cause an accident. They may also send their drivers on courses to refresh their skills. Many of the companies which offer defensive driving courses will be able to offer corporate clients a discount.
